The Cockrill Archive
In the early part of the nineteenth century two brothers, William Cockrill and John Waller Cockrill, both of whom were born in Gorleston formed a partnership in a building firm. This partnership was not to stand the test of time as they soon went their own separate ways. One can only assume the parting was acrimonious as John changed his surname to Cockrell and carried on his business under this name.
Of the two brothers, William's side of the family became more successful in producing homes and many of the larger buildings in the area particularly in Gorleston. One notable exception being the Pier Hotel, Gorleston which was built by John Waller Cockrell towards the end of his life in 1897.
The Cockrills by and large stayed in the Great Yarmouth/Gorleston area but some of the family worked in other area of England and also abroad.
