History of Great Yarmouth and Gorleston-on-Sea

Harold Woodruff Cockrill

Harold was born on Sunday 16th November 1879. After serving in the Boer War Harold went to British Columbia. Later Lillie Brooks, a Yarmouth girl, went out there to join him and then marry him.

Much of the rest of his life is summarised by this obituary from 'The Citizen' of Thursday 30th December 1965:
"- - a resident of North Vancouver since 1911, died suddenly on Tuesday December 21st in the Lions Gate Hospital."

"Born in Gorleston-on-sea, Norfolk, England in 1879, Mr Cockrill came to Vancouver from Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1908 to join the architectural firm of McClune and Fox. Later, in the year 1916, he joined the Engineering Department of the City of Vancouver where he remained until his retirement in 1947."

"He was a life member of the Association of Professional Engineers of B.C., a life member and past Master of Duke of Connaught Lodge, A.F. and A.M. No 64, and a life member of the North Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club."

"Mr Cockrill is survived by his wife Lillie, one son Robert of Montreal and a daughter Betty of North Vancouver."
